Revive Southern Rivers Wetlands Program

The Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority was established in 2004 by the NSW Government to ensure the protection and sustainable development of land, vegetation and water resources within South Coast catchments from Stanwell Park in the North to the Victorian border, including the Snowy River.

The Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority has been a significant regional partner with Conservation Volunteers since 2004 and through the ‘Revive Southern Rivers Wetlands Program’ provides enhanced support to Tom Thumb Lagoon Wetland, Coomonderry Swamp, Werri Lagoon and Lake Conjola. This partnership with the Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority allows Conservation Volunteers to facilitate and manage a variety of experiential conservation projects across these four significant wetlands.

The objectives of the Revive Southern Rivers Wetlands Program are to:

  • Restore wetlands and other aquatic habitat including riparian zones through the development and implementation of action plans at wetland focus sites
  • Raise the level of landholder and community involvement in wetland management in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven areas
  • Promote wetland protection and sustainable wetland management across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven areas

The Revive Southern Rivers Wetlands Program serves as an important training and education ground for the community. An important objective of the project is to raise awareness of the importance of wetlands and the impacts of urban, rural and industrial land uses on such environments. The regular volunteer days at across all four sites attract the support and participation from a wide cross-section of the community.

The Revive Southern Rivers Wetlands Program program aims to expand to include environmental works on private property within these four catchments.  The program offers neighbours an opportunity to undertake environmental works, such as fencing, the removal of environmental weed species, and the establishment of native tree corridors within the Tom Thumb Lagoon Wetland, Coomonderry Swamp, Werri Lagoon and Lake Conjola catchments through the provision of managed teams of volunteers.
