Activity Rating

Moderate. Participants will need to be of reasonable fitness as you will be walking on the world’s largest sand island, often on soft uneven inland sand.

It is important to note that we will be travelling in areas not immediately accessible to medical assistance. If you suffer from heart conditions or similar, expert medical advice may be over an hour away.

Participants under 16 are to be accompanied by an adult.

Program Location

Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island and an area of remarkable natural beauty. The island is 123 km long and covers an area of 166,038 ha.  It was listed as a World Heritage Area in 1992.

Accommodation

Lodge or cabin accommodation in Happy Valley.

Dorm lodge room: shared accommodation up to 3 people to a room.  Maximum accommodation capacity in the lodge is 6 people with communal bathroom facilities within the lodge complex.  BYO sleeping bag and bath towel.  

Cabin single or double room: Private room in a two bedroom cabin with shared bathroom 2 - 3 people within the cabin complex.  C
abin accommodation is more comfortable than dorm accommodation with bed linen and towel provided.  

Contribution To Conservation

You will join a small dedicated team of specialist Queensland Parks and Wildlife Natural Resource Management and Dingo Rangers. Explore diverse, isolated domains rarely seen by others while you collect valuable biological specimens (scats!) which will unlock the secrets of the wild dingo’s diet. This is part of the third stage of the broader Fraser Island Dingo Population Study.

Program Transportation

Sideward facing 4WD. Fraser Island is a sand Island and travel around the island can be bouncy each day will be a bouncy and rough ride.  This program may not be suitable for people with back problems.  


Itinerary

Day 1 Travel to Fraser Island for a briefing on the Dingo population and the research project by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Natural Resource Management. In the late afternoon we check into our accommodation before dinner.  LD

Days 2 – 4  Assist with Dingo Population Studies inthe morning, collecting valuable biological specimens (scats) alongside a dedicated team of specialist Queensland Parks and Wildlife Natural Resource Management and Dingo Rangers. During the afternoon explore Fraser Island - The Maheno ship wreck, Pinnacles, Lake Birrabeen and Lake Garawongera.  BLD

Day 5  Transfer back to the Sunshine Coast for estimated return time of 5pm.  BL

Getting To The Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Airport is serviced by Jetstar and Virgin Blue. Transport between the Brisbane Airport and the Sunshine Coast can be via Airtrain to Nambour or Beerwah train station or Sun-air bus service operate a door to door shuttle bus service with 16 services daily, departing the Brisbane Airport every hour.
