CobOurg Peninsula Turtle Monitoring

Situated on the Western tip of Arnhem Land, Cobourg Peninsula is a remote coastal location, which features sandy beaches, coastal grasslands, mangroves, rainforest patches, swamps, lagoons, coral reefs and sea brass meadows.

Marine turtles are some of the most ancient species on Earth having survived 215 million years, yet they are in danger of disappearing. Pollution, poaching, predation, seaside development and rising effects of global warming are having a negative impact on marine turtle survival, with many species now listed worldwide as critically endangered.

This scientific research program aims to record data on nesting green turtles.  Working alongside experienced researchers participants spend their days patrolling sections of the beach and assisting to record nest and track data, count eggs and tag, weigh and measure turtles.
