Heritage Treasurers
For the past two years, Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) and British American Tobacco Australia (BATA) through the Heritage Treasures program have been involved in a successful partnership that has continued to grow and enhance Australia’s environmental heritage.

The development of the Heritage Treasures program stems from BATA’s belief in the importance of corporate social responsibility. From this belief, BATA have developed a community involvement programme, which aims to create long term sustainability through the development of ongoing partnerships with nationally recognized non - government organisations in the areas of social welfare and the environment.
The program also seeks to provide opportunities for the involvement of BATA’s employees in the communities in which they live and work.
Following on from a successful beginning in 2003, the Heritage Treasures program has gone from strength to strength.
In 2004, 38 BATA staff volunteered on projects, in a range of locations varying from the maintenance of historic steam engines, to the development of walking trails in culturally significant National Parks.
Both CVA and BATA are heartened by the achievements of 2004, and the statistics illustrate the winning combination of the partnership. Last year, over 7,000 square metres of land was weeded, 2 historic railway carriages restored, and 120 kilograms of litter collected from Australia’s beaches, community grounds and National Parks.
BATA staff have enjoyed being involved in such activities, and it is with their help and the assistance of BATA that CVA volunteers can continue to develop the environmental heritage of Australia.
