environmental sustainability programs with local high school students.
A partnership between Conservation Volunteers Australia and Comalco will continue to improve the quality of the Gladstone Region environment, by coordinating community involvement in significant conservation projects.
The primary focus of the partnership is on the rehabilitation of various riverine and wetland areas in the Gladstone Region, including, if appropriate, the Byellee wetland. The `Comalco Community Fund’ reflects Comalco’s commitment to the growth and development of communities within which it conducts its operations. The company’s relationship with these communities is regarded as fundamental to its long-term success.
The program has several aims, including to promote awareness of regional environmental issues-specifically those relating to terrestrial water quality- by incorporating an education component for schools, TAFE, colleges and university in the Gladstone region. Educational programs primarily focus on the rehabilitation of riverine and wetland ecosystems, and its effect on water quality and habitat restoration.
Comalco’s partnership with Conservation Volunteers Australia builds the capacity within local communities to enable the local people to take responsibility for local environmental problems and their resolution.
