Yes, some kangaroos do live in trees! The agile Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo (Dendrolagus lumholtzi) has developed the amazing ability to hop high in the branches of rainforest canopy. In the cool uplands of the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland, this tree kangaroo shares its rainforest habitat with a range of other species that are particularly at risk from the potential impacts of climate change.
Sadly, as rainforest disappears in their Queensland tablelands homes, Tree kangaroos become easy prey for wild dogs and road traffic as they move across cleared areas to other patches of rainforest.
Conservation Volunteers is working with the Wet Tropics Management Authority and a host of other partners on a major long-term project to restore connectivity and enhance the extent, condition and protection of critical remnant rainforest.
You can volunteer to assist with this project, or donate to the Wild Futures program to ensure that this animal continues to hop in the branches above.
