| Encounter Cape York - Turtle Rescue |
Approximately 3 years ago, research was conducted along a stretch of coastline to asses the turtle population of the Western Cape of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The result, was that it was being decimated. The result has been the establishment of the Cape York Turtle Rescue Project, a collaborative partnership between the Queensland Government and the Mapoon Aboriginal Community. Mapoon is located about 90 kilometres north of Weipa on the west coast of Australia's Cape York Peninsula - just 200 kms from 'the tip' - Australia's most northerly point. Camp Chivaree is approximately 30mins away from Mapoon on a 4WD track, on the banks of Janie Creek. Flinders Beach, where the research work is conducted, is just a short trip by dinghy and is an incredibly remote part of Australia’s magnificent coastline. Each year, nesting turtles inundate Flinders Beach during the months from June to October. The Mapoon Community has extended an invitation for visitors to participate in scheduled camps during these months and to help the Indigenous Rangers in their research work. Camp Chivaree is an absolute waterfront, modern, bush camp. Sleeping accommodation is in "Tourer" tents designed to sleep 4 but configured to sleep a maximum of 2. They are fitted out with deluxe mattresses, stretchers and pillows. The camp is extremely comfortable with common dining area and modern amenities. People who enjoy remote Australian wilderness experiences will count their nights under canvas at Janie Creek as one of their special travel experiences.
