GALAPAGOS ISLAND

Galapagos Island, the home of the colourful booby bird, prehistoric iguanas, and dormant volcanoes, has captured the attention of many tourists and research staff in the search for inspiration, interaction with wildlife and spectacular views, the same experiences that also captured the imagination of naturalist and pioneer explorer Charles Darwin in 1831.
As a volunteer you have the unique opportunity to stay on the island of San Cristobal, and assist the research staff at Jatun Sacha research station with high priority conservation projects. In previous years volunteers have assisted with nursery work, collecting seeds and potting native shrubs and trees for future plantations, removing exotic weeds such as raspberry and passion fruit vine, and helped to repair mist nets for bird surveys. Generally the types of activities volunteers are engaged in are simple in nature but have a huge impact on the natural areas research staff are attempting to protect.
The research station is located in a valley at the top of a mountain range which due to high humidity is often clouded over, conditions are damp and ground condition is wet and muddy, gum boots and suitable clothing is essential to ensure your personal enjoyment of the program.
Scheduled recreational activities will consist of guided walks to volcanoes, remote beaches and nearby towns where you will have the opportunity to view exotic birds, amazing marine life, and interact with locals. During free time volunteers will have the opportunity to undertake a private boat, or snorkeling tour (at their own expense) or are welcome to lay back and relax in one of the many hammocks lying beneath the trees.
The lifestyle on the island is generally relaxed and simplistic, volunteers need to be flexible in relation to last minute changes, and the basic camp style accommodation (although volunteer accommodation has recently been improved).
This program provides the perfect opportunity for those people with a keen sense of adventure, to roll out the hammock, splash on the sunscreen, pull on the wide brimmed hat, strap on the binoculars and immerse themselves in an organic, educational and interactive experience on the mystical island of Galapagos.
