JAPAN

Heritage and Cultural Experience

Experience a rich and amazing culture and assist in conservation in Japan!

Nestled in the remote mountains that line the Shogawa River Valley, the old, historic town of Shirakawa-go is located in the picturesque heart of Japan.
A UNESCO World Heritage site and surrounded by alpine wilderness areas this mountain village seems untouched by the modern world and holds remnants of the ancient, rural Japanese way of life.

Conservation Volunteers is seeking the assistance of volunteers to conduct vital conservation and heritage restoration projects within the Shirakawa-go region.

Activities will include:

  • Heritage Maintenance works – repairing heritage buildings, collecting grass and plants for thatched roof repair, and clearing of invasive weeds.
  • Forest Maintenance – invasive plant removal, clearing tracks and trails
  • Cultural activities with local villagers and school children
  • Guided walks of the surrounding alpine area

Japan’s culture is rich and fascinating!   Volunteers will experience the timeless and enchanting local culture with an official welcoming ceremony by locals and host organisation, preparation of meals with local farmers and enjoying traditional mountain lifestyle Japanese meals), volunteers will stay in very traditional Japanese-style accommodation and enjoy guided walks and talks about the area.
