Help protect a Wetland Wonderland in Hokkaido, Northern Japan. Kiritappu is one of six RAMSAR sites in the region of Hokkaido; these wetlands have been identified as regions of international importance as the ecosystem are home to migratory birds, protected animal species and precious wildflowers.
In 2000 a trust was developed to aid in the protection and enhancement of Kiritappu, this trust is the first ever trust established for a wetlands site in Japan. The Trust has been responsible for establishing walking trails, conducting nature surveys, purchasing neighboring land and introduction of ecotourism.
Each year the wetlands attracts many visitors hoping to get a glimpse of some of the rare and precious wildlife that call Kiriatappu wetlands home, in May to October you can expect to see colourful wildflowers such as Japanese Rose, Cotton Grass, and Blackberry Lily. The wetlands is also home to 280 bird species including White-tailed Eagle, Bean Goose and Whooper swan, in addition to birdlife within the neighboring forests you may see Yezo Deer, Brown Bear, and Red Squirrel.
As a volunteer you will help assist staff with rebuilding a boardwalk, building nest boxes, and tree planting in neighboring forest areas. In addition to this, volunteers will also have the chance to partake in bird monitoring activities with local guide, work alongside local school children on tree planting days, and take part in a fishing demonstration with local fisherman which includes meal preparation with their wives.
