NEW ZEALAND
Take time out to lend our New Zealand neighbors a hand! Participants will be based out of the Conservation Volunteers office in Auckland, on the North Island of New Zealand. There are a variety of projects running throughout the year some examples of these are listed below.
Project examples for May - October:
The Forest and Bird Ark in the Park aims to significantly reduce animal and plant pests in a 2000 hectare area of the ARC Cascades Kauri Park in the Waitakere Ranges. The long term goal is to reintroduce native animals and plants now extinct in the Waitakere Ranges. The project has reintroduced the New Zealand Robin, Whitehead and Stitchbird. In the near future it is hoped to reintroduce Bellbird, Kakariki, Kaka, lizards, Giant Weta and Mistletoe. In the long term there is potential to see Kiwi, Kokako and Weka return to the area. Activities include track building and maintenance and removal of invasive weeds in the forest.
Create an urban oasis. Mutukaroa- Hamilin's Hill is a 48 hectare grassy knoll with views to the Manakau harbour in the east and Waitemata harbour in the west. Mutukaroa means the end of many battles' signifying the strategic importance of this land to control access to both harbours in pre-European times. Now surrounded by the light industrial complex of Mt Wellington and Sylvia Park, Mutukaroa-Hamlin's Hill represents an opportunity to create a conservation and recreation oasis in this part of Auckland. The work is varied throughout the year including the removal of invasive weeds and old fence lines, tree releasing and mulching, benching and metalling to create a cycleway, and way-marking for footpaths through paddocks. Tree planting to restore areas of native bush takes place from the beginning of May to the end of August each year.
Motutapu Island and neighboring dormant volcano Rangitoto are a short ferry ride form Auckland CBD. The Motutapu Restoration Trust is working with the Department of Conservation to restore areas of native forest and to reintroduce species of native birds. Activities include nursery work, tree planting, tree releasing and weed removal. The aim of the Trust is to create an open sanctuary free from introduced predators where New Zealand bird life can thrive once more. This will help to provide another important safe breeding ground for threatened native species.
