A Wild Future for the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo
Why does the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo need our help?
Red-tailed black cockatoos are threatened by loss of nesting and feeding habitat, with the added pressure of predation from introduced animals such as red foxes.
-
What are we doing to give these birds Wild Futures?
- Removing pine wildlings from important habitat
- Replanting and fencing food trees – bulokes and stringybarks are critical food sources. Installing “tree collars” around nesting trees to prevent access to nests by red foxes
Our 5 year goal is to:
- Collect seed from mature bulokes to grow advanced buloke seedlings
- Plant 100,000 bulokes in areas of critical habitat need
- Protect seedlings with fences
- Remove all pine wildlings from 100ha of Red-tailed black cockatoo habitat
- Collar all nesting trees in 100ha of critical habitat in the Casterton district
We will also assist with monitoring Red-tailed black cockatoos numbers and breeding success through participating in annual counts, in conjunction with Birds Australia
